![]() ![]() “Mission with” is all about sharing in the BLESSing of God’s love together. Sharing our story completes the relational dynamic that we’re striving for as we go out in mission. ![]() God uses our stories to encourage and inspire others-and sometimes to invite them into a new relationship with God. We all have a story to tell of God’s work in our lives. As we listen and get to know others, we have the opportunity to tell our own story. Without the other parts, our service becomes “mission to” instead of “mission with.” All service can and should be relational. But, it’s important to remember that service is only one dimension. This part is easy since we’re all about service. Sometimes our families even cook lunch for teams! In our home repair ministry, we always invite our teams to make extra lunches so they can ask the family they’re serving to join them. There’s something special about sharing the table with others. We come with open hearts and listening ears ready to hear someone else’s story. It may mean taking an extra few minutes with a child at day camp. This may mean intentionally stepping away from the work at hand to sit down and talk with the family we’re serving. We acknowledge that this is God’s work in all of our lives and thank God for His love and grace that sustains us. We always begin the day (and end it!) in prayer with those we serve. Sometimes we have to be OK with accomplishing a little less in tangible results so we have time to invest in getting to know others on a deeper level.Ī helpful tool we use to do prioritize relational ministry is the BLESS acrostic. We want to accomplish visible results too! But we have to keep this desire in tension with Jesus’ call to be in loving relationships with those we serve. This subtly moves us from “mission with” to “mission to” as we put ourselves in the place of God.Īt Alabama Rural Ministry (ARM), we do everything we can to support our teams so they are empowered to complete critical home repairs for families and tangibly extend Christ’s love with kids. ![]() What’s more: if we let our desire for accomplishment run unchecked, we put ourselves at risk of believing that God’s mission depends on our efforts alone. Creating relationships takes time and is never “efficient,” especially when relationships are being made across boundaries of class, race, age, and culture. If we let this desire lead us, we’ll find ourselves spending more and more time “doing work” rather than taking breaks to build our friendships. Our desire for accomplishment can cause us to work faster and prioritize efficiency. They want to say goodbye knowing-and seeing-that they’ve accomplished something.īut this desire for accomplishment can lead us astray if we allow it to dictate the way we serve. Seeing the possibilities of home repair or kids ministry come to fruition as they serve over the course of a week can fulfill students’ ache to help in some way. As students encounter the struggle of families and kids living in poverty, they desperately want to make a difference. They get excited about the possibility of building a new wheelchair ramp for a family, or reading, playing, and singing with children. Middle and high school students are eager to serve and are full of energy to invest in others. If we’re not careful, this desire can replace friendship as the primary focus of our mission. Many reasons could be at play, but a fundamental reason is our desire for accomplishment that comes from seeing tangible, material results. Developing these friendships is often harder than it seems, especially when serving with middle and high school students. And not just any relationships, but real friendships. ![]() If we’re serious about practicing Jesus’ mission as mission with, our relationships with those we serve have to be at the center of all our ministry efforts. The big news this time is the introduction of an entirely new Mac version, after many years when only Windows was supported. And for those who aren’t, there’s never been a better time to make the switch. This is the 30th anniversary of Corel’s first release of CorelDraw and it is still finding new things to add. New features and refinements since the Mac relaunch in 2019 make this a must-have upgrade for those already in the Corel ecosystem. Bottom lineĬorelDraw Graphics Suite 2020 looks like a bargain compared to Creative Cloud’s “everything and the kitchen sink” approach, especially for designers and illustrators who don’t need Adobe’s video, web, and social media tools. While the Intel-only CorelDraw runs pretty well under Rosetta 2 on an M1-powered MacBook Pro, I did experience occasional launch crashes from time to time. The latest version improves app launch times and overall performance which the company credits to GPU optimization, but there’s still room for improvement. With native support for Sidecar, Touch Bar, and Dark Mode, Corel has done a good job of making Mac users feel right at home in Graphic Suite 2020. The process takes a little longer before displaying side-by-side Before and After previews, especially when making resample adjustments - but most of the bitmaps we converted to illustrations had far more fine detail and were ready to go without further cleanup.ĬorelDraw now supports variable fonts, but not every typestyle offers the full range of adjustments. ![]() The results are far more dramatic when converting bitmap images into vectors with PowerTrace, formerly a standalone app but now incorporated into CorelDraw’s Trace Bitmap command on the property bar. Although resampling can’t add detail that doesn’t otherwise exist, it makes a noticeable improvement, turning otherwise unusable low-resolution images into something serviceable. Choose the one that best describes your image, and an optional Noise Reduction slider appears. There are two default modes (bicubic and nearest neighbor), but after manually increasing file resolution to the desired amount, a pair of additional options appear, Illustration and Photorealistic. Select a placed image, then choose Resample from the menu. Resampling works in the bundled Corel Photo-Paint as well as directly on bitmaps in CorelDraw. New AI-powered resampling makes a dramatic difference when converting bitmap images to vector-based illustrations. The first is resampling lower-resolution images for example, AI and machine learning is now utilized to reduce or entirely remove artifacts from noisy JPEG files. The real standout of CorelDraw Graphics Suite 2020 isn’t a single new thing, but rather how artificial intelligence has been implemented across several features. Comments and replies appear instantaneously, while the provided annotation tools are more than enough to get the job done. Microsoft and Google Suite logins are supported, or guests can opt to receive a sign-in link via email. ![]() ![]() Participants can be configured as No Access, Viewer, Reviewer, or Approver, and invitation recipients aren’t required to set up a Corel account. This feels like something of a lost opportunity, because the collaboration tools are otherwise solid. (Files can also be uploaded directly from disk to Corel Cloud, bypassing CorelDraw entirely). The very slick CorelDraw.app allows basic creation or tweaking of illustrations from a web browser (Safari works, but Chrome, Edge, or Firefox are recommended), but artists are now able to also share designs with others, who can then annotate and comment remotely - an important tool in the current COVID-19 landscape.Īlthough file sharing is initiated from inside the desktop CorelDraw application using the Comments inspector, the rest of the collaboration process takes place entirely on the web app. ![]() Aside from always having the latest and greatest version, one benefit to subscribing is online collaboration, a new feature in the company’s web-based version which is also available as a separate Pro subscription add-on for perpetual users. ![]() ![]() And as the text becomes more difficult, saccade length tends to decrease and regression frequency increases. About 10-15% of the time, readers also shift back (known as regression) to look back at the material that has already been read. Understanding this visual span perception span combination leads us to realize that efficient readers do this easily. It is the saccade movement to the left combined with the perceptual span length that assures that every letter of every word enters the visual field. The complete perceptual span is larger, extending to 14 or 15 letter spaces to the right and 3 to 4 spaces to the left. They are not impacted by the size of the print. Saccade movements typically travel about 6 to 9 letter spaces. Rapid eye movements and eye-tracking are separated by fixations when the eyes are relatively still. This is when the eyes are moving rapidly. Rayner, in 1997, summarized 25 years of research on eye movements. So, we should look for a moment at research on eye movements. In order to read with skill, your eyes need to move smoothly across the page from left to right (visual tracking). Fluency training speeds up your ability to both decode and retrieve information from memory, RAN (Rapid Automatized Naming).Ī second piece of improving fluency is to strengthen your eye movements (eye training). The most effective way to improve your average reading speed is to do reading fluency training. How to Read Faster How do you improve your average reading speed (without sacrificing comprehension)? It might be hard to teach an old dog a new trick, but improving your average reading speed is possible, even as an adult. This is done most effectively through consistent practice in short intervals over days. With more and more new research on neuroplasticity, we know that even adults’ brains can change their brain structure, make new neuropathways and improve their learning skills. ![]() Silent-reading adults average 238 words per minute, and adults that read aloud average 183 words per minute. He found that the average adult reading rate has been overestimated. However, Marc Brysbaert from Ghent University in Belgium analyzed 190 studies on reading rates. Previously, it had been thought that the average adult reads at a rate of 300 words per minute. When reading aloud, the average reader can read 183 words per minute (WPM). The average reader can read 238 words per minute (WPM) while reading silently. Therefore, it would take 3.2 minutes to read one page, 32 minutes to read 10 pages, and a little over an hour to read 20 pages. Division of Instructional Innovation and Assessment, The University of Texas at Austin and research conducted at Cambridge University in England we can assume that the average college student can read 250 words per minute and that the average textbook has approximately 800 words per page. How fast do you and your kids read? Take the reading speed test. Any student, no matter what their age, can learn to read faster. In order to improve reading speed, there are specific skills that need to be nurtured. Technical readings will be read slower than the average reading rates above. Please note that the above reading rates do not take into account technical reading. The chart below includes the average reading fluency rates by grade level and age. That will actually be the sweet spot, or as Goldilocks said, “This one is just right.” Average Reading Speed by Age and Grade Level ![]() If you are a student and not reading at the average rate for your grade level, you should work on improving your reading rate. So, the question remains, should we improve our reading speed? The first answer is yes. When your average reading speed is just right, you read fluently with comprehension. This chair is too big, this one is too small, ah, this one is just right. This makes me think of the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. ![]() People sometimes skim while reading and miss important parts. When you read too fast, supporting details are often lost. Reading too quickly and speed reading can also lead to poor comprehension. Reading slowly makes it difficult to understand what you read. The action of reading slowly is inefficient. When you read too slowly, it is hard to hold a complete thought in place. Reading too slowly impairs our comprehension. ![]() ![]() ![]() Gartner disclaims all warranties, expressed or implied, with respect to this research, including any warranties of merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose. With the unparalleled visibility Zebra® (NASDAQ: ZBRA) provides, enterprises become as smart and connected as the world we live in.
